Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a diverse cast of characters, and a gripping narrative showcasing celestial beings, fiends, and malevolent powers expanding in power within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

Episode 3 finished on a huge suspense moment and introduced the initial group of heroes who will separate from the primary party to begin their separate journey, apart from the additional parties.

The combat-focused team includes Teor (brought to life by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), the cleric (the player), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Considering an extensive roster, it was clear from the outset that having everyone at one table would be unworkable.

Hence, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Introduction, connecting the characters’ stories before splitting into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Planners, and Questers.

The Nature of the Warrior Group

According to the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for participants who enjoy a classically intense fight-heavy story mode where non-violent answers are scarce.

Upon first impression, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might appear out of place, but the events of the latest installment demonstrate why these five characters are best suited for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to proceed after a brutal initial meeting with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose death initiated the story’s plot—exploited the enemy for his selfish purposes, entering the hidden lair, attacking the character, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.

The antagonist then paid off his liabilities and ran away to a secure base in the northern region, beyond the city, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each member has a specific drive to depart the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, seeks vengeance.
  • Kattigan knows the region and advises that it is a hostile environment.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having defied his family’s wishes to execute the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their reputation as key figures in the powerful family could enable the team enter areas they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter pledged a life debt to Wicander for his salvation and will now go with him anywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the authorities that govern the setting for a multiple motives, making staying in the city no longer safe:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and The cleric defied the powerful family and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the family.

This results in them no alternative but to journey toward the remote area in quest for the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

Based on episode three’s follow-up content, we learn that the Soldiers table will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight cast members to assemble the Explorers and Schemers parties.

Fans can look forward to discovering which characters will be assigned to which table in the story’s concluding setup installment, streaming live on October 24.
