Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election
New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his decision to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, Adams had strongly criticized the former governor, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” However, in a new statement, Adams changed his position, stating he now intends to appear with Cuomo in areas where he holds significant backing.
“I think that it is imperative to mobilize the communities of color that have experienced gentrification on how important this election is,” Adams stated.
Adams continued, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them motivated.”
Election Landscape and Current Developments
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose increasing popularity has drawn interest globally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democratic party.
In a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa announced they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.
Earlier this year, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in return for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across the city.
At an separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor answered reporters asking about the support announcement by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew this evening.”
This development came a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ first game at Madison Square Garden, which occurred immediately following a heated candidate debate.
