SNAP Payments Set to Expire for Tens of Millions Throughout Ongoing Government Closure
The United States Department of Agriculture declared recently that SNAP funds under one of the country’s largest support systems won't be issued next month due to the ongoing government funding lapse.
Impasse Persists For Nearly Four Weeks
The funding lapse was in its 25th day when the announcement was made, in response to appeals by more than two hundred Congressional Democrats asking the department to access emergency reserves to cover November's food assistance.
“Ultimately, the well has run dry,” the USDA stated. “Now, no payments will be distributed” starting next month.
Millions Affected
More than 41 million individuals count on the regular assistance, as reported by official statistics. In certain states, like one southwestern state, reliance on this assistance affects one-fifth of the population.
Internal communications seen by journalists showed that federal authorities chose not to tap emergency reserves for November food benefits.
Partisan Impasse
Lawmakers from both parties remain deadlocked about the way to support and resume government operations.
A statement from the director at a budget research center suggested that the White House had chances to prepare in advance to avoid interruption in payments.
“Officials were able and expected to taken steps before now to be prepared to use these funds,” the comments added. “Rather, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” as conservative leaders work to influence Democratic senators to approve a funding package that would resume the federal government.
States Prepare
Governors in two affected states activated emergency protocols in recent days to make money available to combat potential hunger in anticipation of nutrition assistance payments stopping in November.
