The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
