Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to question certain calls made by the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
